Noah Cribb
Realms of Unimaginable Power

September 8 - October 13, 2023

Fredric Snitzer Gallery is pleased to present Realms of Unimaginable Power, Noah Cribb's debut solo exhibition. Cribb's presentation sources inspiration from personal mythologies built upon experiences centered around a closeness to the natural world. As the title suggests, these explorations often involve investigating complexities linked to human experience, spirituality, and fantasy.

Cribb's connection to nature is evident in his art, using natural materials throughout his work as a starting point for building out worlds of fantasy, imagined or otherwise rooted in first-hand experiences with specific places in time. The Florida native grew up continuously interacting with his local environments, from regular hikes with his grandmother to post-hurricane debris collection with his father. These early memories directly influenced Cribb, who still visits natural environments as part of his process to gather experiences, imagery, sounds, and materials.

Cribb's work often includes driftwood, scraps, plants, and other raw natural findings. The debris he collects inspires the palettes used throughout the paintings, implementing muted tones of browns, tans, blues, and greens in subtly layered washes. These natural materials are arranged intuitively within his paintings to create loosely woven narratives, honing in on how light falls and casts the essence of each found material onto the pictorial plane.

Cribb's scenes sit between abstraction and figuration, shadowy figures often appearing in different iterations of the landscapes the artist renders alongside abstracted debris arrangements of recurring elements and symbols that become part of his mythology. The results are whimsical and serene images that transport the viewer into another world.

Exchange also plays an integral part within the artist's practice. Gifted items and elements, such as waxed papers from flowers received, are often incorporated, becoming stenciled silhouettes. This exchange also takes form in reference to the dried orange debris or citrus juice utilized, linked to an initial intimate encounter where the fruit connects to that specific sensual experience. The artist's spiritual journey, a path forged through the turbulent trails of matters of the heart, intimacy, and spirituality, is directly reflected within the scenes cast onto the pictorial plane.

Noah Cribb ( b.Lakeland, Florida) is a multi-media artist based in Miami. He has shown work at the SVA residencies, Freedom Tower, and Edge Zones and is part of the Vizcaya Museum permanent collection. He received a BFA from New World School of The Arts in 2022.
